Kids. If you think that teenagers need less attention than little kids, you are SO wrong! Take it from a teacher. Even boys can be very manja. When you reprimand them for making noise, they just gonna say, "Cher, si XX mengacau bah!" So when I go back to work on Monday, I'm going to hear the kids whine again.
Last year, I had the privilege of teaching a short, acne face boy named Salleh and an overweight, few teeth missing girl called Amal. They fought every time in class and there was no sense in trying to make them stop. They're just going to whine, "Chicheeeeerrrr, si XX kacau akau bah!" and threw insults at each other.
One day I just got tired, very tired of hearing them fight and complain to me.
T:You two behave like a married couple! Stop it!
S: Cheeerrrr...si...(I switch off).
A: Cheeerrr..si.. (I switch off).
T: Well stop acting like an old married couple. That's what married couples do, they fight.
A: Pui barigali! Nada ku kan kawin dangan orang buntak gundul.
S: Awu kampis kan dulu parut ah! Pasang gigi palsu.
T: Stop!
S/A: Chhheeeeeerrrrr.....
I waited for them to stop arguing. Stared hard at them til I got their attention.
T: You know you're destined to be together.
S/A: Eeeee..mihir!
T: It's in our religion.
By then both looked at me and the class also kept quiet. They fell for my hook.
S/A: Apa eh chicher ani. Buat buat cerita saja!
T: It's true. That's why you're acting like a married couple.
They kept quiet and started fidgeting in their seats.
T: Kan dalam ugama, orang beramal adalah orang yang salleh dan orang yang salleh adalah orang yang beramal.
The whole class started laughing. " Yaaahh! Banar tu teecher!" Someone bangs his table in tune to an org kawin song. The couple looked at me open mouthed.
And that was the day I stopped their bickering. But of course, there are other couples to work on.
