Another Sunday

"Pija!"

"Mujarila!"

"Pijelepia!"

"Broning!"

"Wepping!"

Translation: Pizza, mozarella, philadelphia (cheese), browning (sauce) and whipping (cream). If they were my students, I would already say, "Apakan kamu ani? Orang tua tua kah? Teruk jua sabutan kamu ani!" But of course I don't have the guts to say that for two reasons. First, they are not my students but my classmates in cooking class. Second, they ARE old!

So I never bother trying to fix their broken English but sometimes I do struggle a bit in trying to understand what's going on.

"Lai kau pacah kan talur ani. Lapas atu kau asing kan yang kuningnya. Lapas atu kau blender yang putihnya. tu ada blender di sana" instructed my teacher who was in a sparkly dress and chunky jewellery. So off I went to fetch the blender.

Then a classmate pulled me aside and whispered, "Lai atu bukannya blender to lai. Ketani kan buat kek, inda jua pakai atu."

I was a bit clueless. "Tapi cigu cakap pakai blender jua!"

Sensing the confusion, my teacher went and grabbed the "blender". She walked past me, smiling because of my lack of know-how. My classmate smiled at me too and said, "Yang cikgu pigang atu baru namanya blender lai."

Luckily I did not laugh in their faces. They took the eggs off my hands and asked me to peel a few potatoes instead. Obviously they would not trust a person who "doesn't know" what a blender is to bake a cake!
