One of the questions I asked the kids in class was "Do you know what frenchfries are?". One might think, "What a dumb question!" Well so did I until I realised that none of the kids in my class heard of it before! Nevertheless I didn't give up.
"Claaaass, have you been to McDonald's?" From the look on their faces, I could see that they've never been to or seldom go to McDonald's. So I tried again, "Jollibee? Sugarbun?" Again my students looked at me as if they didn't know what I was talking about.
Aaaarghh! Finally I lost my patience! Cakap Melayu tarus (a big no no in teaching English) "Kalau kamu bali burger selalunya apa dangannya?"
Finally one kid raised his hand quickly and stood up. "I know teecha!" I let out a sigh! "Salad!"
Aiyah, all in a day's work!
