It's soon observation time for teachers including me. I never thought that teachers are always scrutinized. I remember clearly the time leading up to my first observation. I was teaching composition at that time. That was for the first time and hell I was so nervous. I was also very serious, so serious in fact that I had books and paper under each armpit, a piece of paper in my hand and a piece of chalk in another. I was teaching about "My Pet" and the model was about how one boy kept fighting fish as pets. As the kids didn't know what the fish looked like, I had to explain but I was struggling. I couldn't find anything small enough around me to illustrate the size of the fish. Finally I had an idea. I had read somewhere that the fish can be as small as your fingernail. So I used my right hand to show my fingernail. As I was holding a chalk between my thumb and index finger (?), I held my middle finger up in the air and said, "Class do you think that the fish is as big as my fingernail?" The kids started laughing, especially the boys while the girls looked embarrassed. I was pissed cause I thought they weren't paying attention so I shook my finger really hard and it only made them laugh much harder. Only when my finger was right between my eyes did I realize what I had done. I just cleared my throat and got on with the lesson. Till now, I'm remembered as the teacher who gave the kids the finger. |
Teaching isn't a piece of cake. It has its many ups and downs but it's easier to see the lighter side of things. This blog looks at the experience of a local English teacher with regards to classroom interaction and language use inside & outside the classroom.
