Turtle Power

Everytime I end one class and have to walk past a particular class, I feel jealous. All the teacher has to do is just stand in front of the class & explain.

T: Claasss. And the process is caaaaalllled....*rising intonation*
Ss: Photosynthesis (chorus)

T: What is O2? It is Oxxxx...?
Ss: Oxygen (chorus)

The kids stay in their seats and answer the teacher's questions. They even sit up. If that ever happened in my class, it would be a miracle. So everytime I walk past, I feel like jumping into the class and say "Boo!" just to ruin the teacher's lesson. But nah, that would mean I'm crazy.

In my class, the only time when the kids are quiet is during tests or exams & crossword puzzles. Other times, especially language games, all hell breaks loose (a bit of exaggeration but who cares?)

T: Do you know what is the meaning of extinct?
Ss: No.
T: Extinct means gone forever, disappeared from the face of the earth. Like the dinosaurs for example.
S: Tapi teacher dinosaurs mana pupus.
T: Yes they are extinct.
S: Tapi si Barney idup jua lakat Cher.

T: So you can't eat turtle eggs anymore. It's against the law.
S: Talur ayam teecha?
T: Not against the law.
S: Talur itik chicher?
T: No.
S: Talur burung chicher?
T: No
S: Talur kucing chicher?
T: N..eh banar kau ah!
Ss: Ha, ha, ha.

S: Chicher, napa inda bulih makan turtle eggs?
T: Because they will disappear like the dinosaurs. Extinct.
S: Tapi Ninja Turtles idup jua lakat teecha!
Ss: Ha, ha, ha. Teenage mutant ninja turtles, heroes in a hard shell, turtle power!

T: So today you have learnt the past tense. Can someone tell me how we form the regular past tense verbs?
Ss: Add -ed!
T: Give me examples please.
Ss: Played, jumped, climbed, studied........
S: Teecha, tambah -ed kah?
T: Yes.
S: Jadi kalau "spend" jadi "spended" tah tu ah!
Ss: Ha, ha! Spended, spended, spended! (chanting together!)

T: Can you please copy what's on the board?
S: Copy cher?
T: Yes. Copy!
S: Kami inda tedapat kopi cher. Neskipi (nescafe) mau kita?
T: Nescafe is coffee!
Ss: Booo si XXX! Kan becali.

So as you can see, I have my reasons to be jealous. But at least in my class, the students are speaking!
